Perf Go Green Biodegradable Commercial Trash Bags

August 12, 2010 — When last we checked in with those environmental elves at Perf Go Green, the company was introducing a line of green alkaline batteries and a battery recycling effort. They also make biodegradable trash bags — 13-gallon kitchen bags, 30-gallon lawn-and-leaf bags, kitty-litter liners and the like — and have lately introduced an item suitable for any co-op or condo apartment building : large, 39-gallon, commercial-grade garbage bags. For any co-op / condo board looking at inexpensive ways to go green, well, it's a lot cheaper and easier than installing solar panels. Not that you shouldn't install solar panels.

The company says its trash bags are made of recycled plastic combined with an oxo-biodegradable proprietary application, and that within two years, "when discarded in soil in the presence of microorganisms, moisture and oxygen, biodegrades, decomposing into simple materials found in nature."

That phrase "materials found in nature" might be hedging things a little, since plastic is made from oil, which is indeed found in nature. As one reviewer wrote, the bags may not be truly biodegradable, and "simply break down into small pieces which are not reabsorbed into usable biomass." But even this critic acknowledges that "they at least do break down and are made from recycled plastic."

The Grand Hyatt Hotel in Manhattan uses three custom-sized versions of company's commercial trash bags for its entire operation, Perf Go Green says, and the Six Flags theme park corporation says it uses "Perf Go Green biodegradable commercial trash bags throughout the company's twenty locations in the United States, Mexico and Canada." So hey, if a couple of big capitalist multinational corporations are willing to go green with its garbage bags, then what forward-thinking, earth-conscious co-op or condo board can't at least consider it?

Like many specialty products, the commercial bags are primarily available.online. The Hannaford supermarket chain, for example, sells them online, with an eight-pack of 10 bags each selling for $68.32, and AmericanRX.com has the same for $66.79. (Shipping and tax, if applicable, also affects the price, of course.)
