Intelligent Security Systems License-Plate Recognition

Feb . 12, 2010 — Sure, your co-op or condo parking garage has got an automated security gate. But anyone with a borrowed or stolen keycard can use it to get through, and what co-op or condo board wants to deal with residents letting their friends park in their parking space, or even illegally renting out their space?

Well, just like Monty Python's Spanish Inquisition, nobody expects ... license-plate recognition! With a camera and associated computer tech, you not only can view and record vehicles entering your co-op or condo's garage, but you capture their license-plate numbers, allowing you to access a vehicle's registration information, and whether said vehicle belong to a resident, staff member, contractor or — ta-daa! — unidentified person.

The SecurOS AUTO brand system from the New Jersey-based Intelligent Security Systems is an "intelligent module" that uses SecurOS, a proprietary variant on the common Unix computer-operating system. It provides license plate recognition and comparative analysis of face plates for all types of vehicles. The company says it works reliably in the wide range of external conditions, and is easily integrated into legacy security equipment, executive devices and external databases. Overall, it's is a way of dealing with registration tasks and issues of car safety and traffic/access control.

The system, says the company, provides "advanced reaction" capability — love that Tom Clancyesque term — and automatic notification of your security staff or other involved entity; works with your existing equipment and devices, such as barriers and automatic gates; allows database searches of images, video and information of time, date and vehicle direction; and integrates with external databases, including prohibition/permission to pass, and automatic notification regarding vehicles with a flagged license plate.

There's something obviously Big Brotherish about this automated ability to track and database every vehicle's identity and coming-and-going, but ... well there  is no "but." It is what it is. If garage security or simple parking-space hanky-panky is an issue, license-plate recognition is a solution.
