Earth Day Is Sunday

New York City

April 20, 2018 — Full slate of festivities scheduled for the weekend.

Earth Day will turn 48 on Sunday. This year’s New York City festivities begin a day early, when the Department of Transportation will turn Broadway into a car-free, pedestrian-friendly zone between Union Square and Times Square, from 9 A.M. to 3 P.M. on Saturday. The rationale, according to DOT: “Car-Free Day NYC is to encourage New York City drivers to choose alternative means of moving about the city on Earth Day.”

On the big day itself, Union Square will host one of the nation’s biggest Earth Day events. Earth Day Initiative’s annual outdoor Earth Day New York 2018 event features dozens of exhibitors, including environmental non-profits, green businesses, kids' activities, and live performances. With more than 70 organizations represented, there is something for everyone. The event is free and open to the public, and it will go on, rain or shine.
