Dump Trump Sentiment Hits City’s Real Estate
Oct. 26, 2016 — New Yorkers want to remove the T-word from their buildings.
On the canopy above the front entrance, the two words are spelled out in large silver letters that appear to have a high tin content: TRUMP PLACE. This is the condominium tower at 220 Riverside Boulevard on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, and it’s just one of several buildings in the city where residents are working to get the name of the Republican presidential nominee removed from their facades.
Residents in 220 Riverside Boulevard have been circulating a petition to have the T-word removed, the New York Times reports, “though it is unclear that it has had any effect.” At nearby rental properties developed by Trump facing the Hudson River between 59th and 72nd Streets, residents are circulating similar petitions.
Linda Gottlieb may have expressed the Dump Trump sentiment best. A television and film producer who lives in a $9,700-a-month apartment at 140 Riverside Boulevard, Gottlieb says, “For me, watching Trump talk about groping women and then seeing his name above my home was the breaking point. It was time to declare that we don’t want to live in a building bearing his name, or a country suffering his presidency.”
Marjorie Jacobs, who lives at 180 Riverside Boulevard, adds, “It’s embarrassing to tell people where you live.”
