Viking A.D.A.-Compliant Emergency / Elevator Phones

June 16, 2010 — You hear about it every so often : people trapped in what should be a perfectly working co-op / condo elevator. Why, we had a woman trapped in our very own nice high-rise with a full staff — with the security camera either not working or not being looked at. So the woman, who'd left her cell phone at home, went to use the elevator's call box ... and found there wasn't any! Nothing! Not only that, but because the elevator, built before a certain year, it wasn't even required to have one! The poor woman was stuck for an hour, and when she later went to seek redress, well, the managing agent basically told her, "Tough luck."

There's no need for that. And as our population gets grayer, there's no need to court danger in that. That why this line of emergency / elevator phones that are compliant with the American with Disabilities Act not only make your residents safer, but it's more humane — and may even present some disabled individual from suing your co-op board or condo association till you go blind. Makes the $340 seem like a pretty smart investment.

Viking's various models of A.D.A.-compliant emergency / elevator phones each come with an auto dialer and a digital announcer, designed to provide reliable handsfree communication. It can automatically light "call connected" LEDs for the hearing-impaired, plus a Grade 2 Braille label for the visually-impaired. It also transmits a unique-location I.D. code or a voice announcement — so if you're stuck, well, you're not stuck.

Other features include a non-volatile digital voice announcer with 16 seconds of voice memory, advanced call-progress detection, and hands-free operation. It's remotely programmable, including to auto-answer incoming calls, and can store and dial up to five emergency phone numbers — while also cycling through backup emergency and non-emergency numbers that are busy or don't answer. There's an an enhanced weather protection (EWP) option for outdoor or harsh environments. Harsh environments? You should have been at the annual meeting with the woman stuck in the elevator had some word for management. Now that was a harsh environment — and without something like this, a completely avoidable one.
