Scoop De Tail Sentry II Pet-Waste Station

Dec. 18, 2009 — The first thing to know about this week's new product is that it's free to co-ops, condos and homeowners associations in the U.S. and Canada. Yes, free.

Why? Because Rebecca "Vicki" Davidson, founder of the pet-waste removal company Scoop De Tail, is serious about the health hazards of dog doo, which is left behind on too many sidewalks by too many dog owners. It's also a way of getting her company's waste-bag stations out there and presumably selling you bags later on. But there's a very real greening component to this, too: Unlike the plastic bags that usually come with such stations, Scoop De Tail's bags, the company says, are 100 percent oxo-biodegradable, so that after you use one, it turns into compost within about a year.

"People don’t realize the health threat to their families and pets," Davidson says. "They don’t know that flies lay eggs on dog feces that are left on the ground. These eggs hatch and turn into parasites like tapeworms, hookworms and roundworms....These become a health problem when a dog sniffs at it, eats it, rolls around in it or accidentally steps in it and tracks it into the house. In turn, it becomes easy for humans, especially small children, who have been known to become blind from roundworm infestations, to become ill simply by coming in contact with a contaminated dog."

Additionally, she syas, “It’s also an environmental hazard, because uncollected dog waste eventually ends up going into the ground or down sewer drains. In either case, it finds its way into the waterways and over time ends up killing wildlife."

The aluminum, rust-resistant, locking dispensers hold 600 of the biodegradable bags. Davidson, by the way, is a member of the Association of Professional Animal Waste Specialists (aPaws), so, clearly, in this no-joke important health / environmental field, she's someone who knows her ... well, you know.
