Miura LX-300 Steam Boiler

Jan. 6, 2011 — Forget about carbon footprints. Or, well, no, don't forget about them, exactly, but just sort of mentally set them aside for now. Because this week's co-op / condo new product is something that reduces your steam footprint.

That's because this particular steam-heat boiler has a compact design with "zero side clearance," a fancy way of saying you can install it right up against up a wall, helping give it a small footprint. Miura — founded in Japan in 1927 and now one of the world's largest industrial steam-boiler manufacturers — says this and other design considerations allow the 300-horsepower LX-300 to operate in a quarter the space this would normally take. We didn't do any actual measurements ourselves, of course, but we'll give this venerable company the benefit of the doubt and just say it's totally worth asking your engineer about if you're thinking of replacing your old boiler. Now, here's the skinny, so to speak....

Manufactured at one of Miura's two North American plants, the LX-300 uses a proprietary “low water content, water-tube” design that the company says produces steam in just five minutes while maintaining an 87 percent fuel-to-steam efficiency. This particular model's design is said to have consistently low emissions of the pollutant NOx (nitrogen oxides produced during combustion. So: NOx, NOx, who's there? Very little!)

Since, like many modern boilers, the LX-300 is modular, you can customize your steam plant and your load profile in whatever way best manages your energy use. The 63 x 153 1/2 x 127-inch (WxLxH) unit weighs 10,935 pounds when operational. Tell your engineer it's an electrically powered, forced-draft, step-fired-modulation boiler fueled by natural gas or propane.

Say, any Blue Devils fans out there? Then you might want to know that Duke University has just installed 15 Miura LX series gas-fired steam boilers with the aim of providing the campus with 35 percent more steam capacity while helping reduce Duke’s environmental footprint. Just saying, if it's good enough for Duke.... (And let's not have any guff from any North Carolina Tar Heels!)
