Green Glue Noiseproofing Sealant
May 12, 2010 — Bring in da noise, bring on da glue. It may be just that simple with this ingenious little gem of a New Product for co-op and condo board to consider: A glue-like compound you insert between walls, and which dissipates up to 90 percent of noise, according to independent lab tests cited by the upstate New York company Green Glue. Of course, it may be that no one in your building ever complains about their neighbors' loud voices, TV, music or dogs. They say it's like that in the land of Oz.
Here in New York City and other places in the land of Reality, noise bleeding from one apartment to another can be a real headache — both for the neighbors and for poor co-op / condo board members who have to listen to residents griping to you about it. One solution might be this low-cost sealant that your super or handyman applies like caulk into the cracks between walls, ceilings and floors that allow noise to penetrate into adjoining rooms.
One of several such noiseproofing products that the company makes, including compounds, clips and joist tape — and hey, who can have too much joist tape? — Green Glue noiseproofing sealant fits into a standard quart-sized caulking gun. It can be painted once dry, and is cleanable with plain soap and water. The company is also very proud of the fact that it "contains no plasticizers .. which promotes long life (the sealant will not slowly dry out and crack with age)."
As well, the company charmingly states, it's "economical relative to other esoteric sealants." What we don't know about esoteric sealants could fill a wall with the stuff, but we'll tell you this: $84 for 34 pounds of sealant seems like little enough to pay to block out all that godawful noise ... and we don't just mean sound drifting between apartments, if you catch our drift.
