Forbo Marmoleum Composition Tile

June 22, 2010 — Mr. or Ms. Board President, you have the floor — now, do you want it to be durable non-skid, highly decorative, sound-dampening or eco-conscious? What? All of the above? Well, Mr. or Ms. Board President, have we got a composite floor tile for you that'll, well ... floor you!

Going by the brand name Marmoleum — is it marble? is it linoleum? OK, it's linoleum, but it's not your father's linoleum — it's the anchor of about a dozen different models of floor tile for anything from your co-op lobby to your condo community room to your pool area to your laundry room. Available as sheets or tiles, they use the latest in linoleum technology, a process that the 82-year-old Forbo Flooring of Hazleton, Penn., calls "Topshield": a three-component finish that the company says reduces the need for a chemical finish and enables lower cleaning costs. Want to know more? Step right this way....

The models include the classically marbleized Marmoleum Real, which comes in 60 colors guaranteed to be produced through 2016; the striking Marmoleum Graphic, with 10 designs concentrating on black, white and gray and modeled after the feel of Rembrandt etchings and Escher lithographs; Marmoleum Decibel, available in 20 colors, and which incorporates an acoustic layer designed to reduce impact sound by 17 dB compared with similar flooring; and the newest collection, MCT / Marmoleum Composite Tile, which was awarded the Sustainable Materials Ratings Technology (SMaRT) Platinum Certification, developed by the forward-sounding Institute for Market Transformation to Sustainability.

Co-op and condo floors are like artwork you walk on —they make an impression on you while you're making an impression on them, so to speak. In terms of building enhancement, floors are a relatively inexpensive improvement. And as Burt in The Muppets once sang: "La la la ... linoleum!" How are you going to get a better recommendation than that?
