How Much Does It Cost to Evict Five 90-Year-Olds?

Park Slope

June 3, 2016 — A cool $3.35 million.

A Brooklyn judge has ordered Haysha Deitsch, owner of the Prospect Park Residence, to pay $3.35 million to the last holdouts fighting eviction from the assisted-living facility, the New York Post reports.

The five nonagenarian holdouts will receive the bulk of the payout, and they have until the end of August to leave the 134-unit building – about 30 months after Deitsch ordered all residents to vacate within three months because he’d agreed to sell the building to the developer Sugar Hill Capital Partners for $76.5 million. If Deitsch fails to make the payments on time, the plaintiffs will get more time to vacate – and more money.

“It’s definitely a win for our clients,” said Fred Millet, the attorney who represented the plaintiffs. “With the settlement they were able to make plans to move elsewhere, and the money to make it happen.”
