Performance Brick Color-Match System

Feb. 13, 2009 — Co-op and condo boards of landmarked buildings know that one of the hardest tasks in exterior renovation is following Landmarks Preservation Commission rules — which don't require that you replace materials with like materials, but that the replacements be exact visually. That's where this new product comes in: You provide the manufacturer with a sample of your brick façade, and the company creates a visually matching faux brick of recycled gypsum wallboard and other gypsum products, reinforced with a high-density polymer. OK, so you wouldn't want a 10-story wall of the stuff, but it could be great for strategic patching or as an inexpensive stopgap.
The non-porous, overlapping and interlocking panels are 1 1/16-inches thick, and provide up to a 3/4-inch airspace behind each, to allow for air flow and water drainage and to help insulate. Primary panels are two-staggered bricks long and four bricks high (21 1/2 x 11 4/5 inches) and half-panels are the same length but only one brick high. Also available are full corners, corner returns, soldier rows and soldier corners.
Since they're made primarily from gypsum, Performance Brick is fire-resistant. UV stabilizers blended in during manufacturing helps provide protection against damage from UV rays, mold, algae and insects. It has a 50-year limited warranty.
